Q&A

Q: What happened to the reality shows dealing with guns? I enjoyed watching "Top Shot," where contestants competed using different weapons, as well as two others: "Sons of Guns" and the one with the gun appraiser from "Pawn Stars."

I have some potentially good news for you. "Top Shots" is still on; it's just moved (way) down the cable lineup. After having aired for four years on History, it was canceled in 2013. However, it was picked up by Outdoor Channel, which still airs new episodes.

Indeed, Outdoor Channel seems to be the place for gun-TV aficionados such as yourself. It has a number of firearm-themed reality shows in its lineup.

As for the other two shows you list, unfortunately they're just gone, but for very different reasons.

"Lords of War," the show starring former "Pawn Stars" gun expert Sean Rich, only aired 15 episodes on the National Geographic channel back in 2013 before being canceled.

It seems as if "Sons of Guns" had a better chance at longevity, were it not for the legal troubles of its star.

Shortly after the show wrapped its fifth season on Discovery in 2014, star Will Hayden was arrested and charged with child molestation and aggravated rape. On the basis of the seriousness of the charges, Discovery dropped the show. "Given the serious and horrific nature of the charges against Will Hayden, we have decided to halt further production of 'Sons of Guns' and cancel the series,” the network said in a statement. His case still hasn't gone to trial.

Apparently it's hard to get a gun show made these days. Chris Cheng, who won season 4 of "Top Shot," tried to launch his own reality show in 2013, but it never got off the ground.

He had a pretty good angle, too: The gay, Chinese-Japanese American from California who used to work for Google said his goal for the show was to highlight diversity in the American competitive-shooting world.
