Q&A

Q: I've recently discovered the reruns of "Bergerac" and I love the lead actor. What else can I see him in? Perhaps he's in a similar role somewhere else.

I literally did a double-take to make sure I understood your question right, because most people these days aren't talking about John Nettles in relation to "Bergerac."

Today, Nettles is generally better known as DCI Tom Barnaby on "Midsomer Murders," a role he played from 1997 to 2011.

But maybe more people should know about "Bergerac," another cop show that starred Nettles from 1981 to 1991, if only to heal the wound they still feel from Nettles leaving "Midsomer."

He quit the show in 2011, saying he'd simply had enough. He was replaced by another actor in the same role, and "Midsomer Murders" is still producing new episodes today, hence why Nettles is still associated with it.

After leaving "Midsomer," Nettles guest-starred on the second season of the historical drama "Poldark," so you can catch him there, too.

Other than that, you'd do better just watching a lot of British TV and being delighted when he pops up. He's done a ton of one-off spots, often playing around with his TV fame. He played himself in a 2014 episode of the sitcom "Toast of London," played his "Midsomer Murders" character in a 2003 episode of the sketch show "French and Saunders" and played his "Bergerac" character in a 1993 episode of the comedy series "The Detectives."
