Q&A

Q: I just want to know, is "Good Witch" gone for good? I saw the one show before Christmas but haven't seen or heard anything about it since.

"Good Witch" is definitely not gone for good, but it's gone for a while, at least.

Since almost its very beginning (indeed, since before it was a show), "Good Witch" has been built around the Halloween special. The weekly show began life as a string of annual made-for-TV movies, most of which aired as Halloween specials. That tradition has continued with the show, which for five years now has aired Halloween specials each year to break up the time between seasons.

We're in that between-season time right now. The most recent episode that aired was the Halloween special, and we still have at least two months to wait before the regular season begins.

I say "at least" because the regular-season premieres haven't been so consistent. For the first four seasons, they came in the spring, either April or May. But the fifth season didn't debut last year until June.

They have, however, been consistent about length. Each season so far has been 10 episodes, so that's what we can expect for the upcoming sixth season.

Given that the sixth season hasn't really begun yet (for Hallmark's record-keeping purposes, it considers the Halloween episode to be part of the sixth season, but in practical terms it's a separate thing), it's a bit early to wonder about a seventh-season renewal. However, it may not be as much of a lock as it has been in previous years.

"Good Witch" has been a ratings smash for Hallmark, so it's been pretty quick to renew it each year (the sixth-season renewal came just a few episodes into the fifth last year), but this year comes with a significant change: It's the first without Grace (Bailee Madison, "Trophy Wife"), daughter of central character Cassie (Catherine Bell, "Army Wives"). That change may mess with the show's chemistry, so the network may wait to see how things (that is, ratings) shape up before making a decision.
