Amazingly enough, that was indeed Mel Gibson singing in "Pocahontas."

The gruff actor, not known for being open-minded, agreed to give it a shot. He even said he enjoyed doing it, though he had no illusions about how good he was.

"My musical talent is that I'm a very good listener," he joked to Entertainment Weekly in 1995, shortly before the movie came out. "The singing was enjoyable, but I can't see making a career change."

And we can say, with 22 years of hindsight, that he didn't make a career change. Indeed, it's the only musical role Gibson's ever had on film.

It's one of only two voice roles he's done, in fact. Many people seem to get bitten by the voice-acting bug after doing a Disney movie, but not Gibson. He did "Pocahontas" in 1995, then "Chicken Run" in 2000 (by a different famous animation studio -- Aardman Animations, the "Wallace and Gromit" people), and that was it.

If you're thinking, "Wait a minute, what about the 'Pocahontas' sequel?" you've fallen for an old Gibson-family trick. In "Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World" (1998), Mel's role was taken over by his little brother, Donal Gibson. In a 1998 interview with "Entertainment Tonight," Donal said that the brothers' voices are so alike that they often impersonate each other on the phone. "I once got a call from a famous Hollywood director in Australia ... and he thought I was Mel. He was begging me to do a film. I almost said yes."
