In the 1980s, after recently being abandoned by her father due to a cannibalistic attack at a friend’s sleepover, Virginia teenager Maren Yearly (Russell) sets off to find her biological mother Janelle (Sevigny) in Minnesota. During her journey, Maren encounters Sully (Rylance), a fellow “eater,” and follows him to the home of an elderly woman. She soon flees, and while shoplifting supplies, Maren meets Lee (Chalamet), another “eater” who is himself on a cross-country journey to deal with familial issues. As the pair spend more time together, they fall in love and attempt to carve out a normal life together, leaving their cannibalistic tendencies behind them.
Traveling to Faro Island, the former home of famed film director Ingmar Bergman, filmmaking couple Tony (Roth) and Chris (Krieps) prepare for a working summer retreat. Settling into a routine, Chris struggles to ask Tony about the trouble she is having with a script, and Tony’s preoccupied nature leaves her feeling anxious about her relationship. Using her own relationship as inspiration, Chris throws herself into writing the story of Amy (Wasikowska) and Joseph (Danielsen Lie), whose childhood romance is reignited during the island wedding of a mutual friend.
When Japanese competitors open Honghua Military Academy, a rival martial arts school in the Japanese occupied region of Tianjin, China, Chinese martial arts schools are invited by Colonel Takeda (Eerdeni) to try to prove the supremacy of Chinese martial arts over Japanese Aikido. It falls to lowly porter Huo Yuanjia (To) to deliver swift justice and battle the dreaded Colonel Takeda to not only save his area’s martial arts schools but also fight for China itself.
