In 1862, pioneering meteorologist James Glaisher (Redmayne) is determined to advance human knowledge of the weather by flying higher that anyone else in history, despite criticism from his colleagues. Teaming up with daredevil balloon pilot Amelia Rennes (Jones) to head out on a groundbreaking expedition in a hot air balloon, the unlikely duo find themselves pushed to their physical and emotional limits in their hunt for answers. As they reach the edge of the atmosphere, their research expedition becomes a harrowing fight for survival.
After the tragic and sudden death of their father, Otis Sr. (David), siblings O.J. (Kaluuya) and Emerald (Palmer) inherit their family's ranch in Agua Dulce, California.
