After an awkward date in an Ohio diner, Queen (Turner-Smith), a criminal defense attorney, is driven home by her Tinder match, Slim (Kaluuya). On the drive home, the couple is pulled over by a police officer who claims Slim was driving erratically. After Slim is asked to step out of the vehicle, the situation escalates, and the officer draws his gun on the couple. When Queen steps out of the car to record the encounter on her phone, the officer shoots Queen, grazing her leg. In reaction to the gunfire, Slim takes the officer's gun and shoots him in self-defense. Deciding to go on the run rather than spend their lives in jail, the couple quickly become viral sensations and incite grief and hysteria worldwide.
When a local farmer asks corporate lawyer Robert Bilott (Ruffalo) to investigate a number of unexplained deaths linked to the DuPont chemical company in West Virginia, he reluctantly accepts, despite being employed by large corporations himself.
