White Elephant

As soon as Gabriel Tancredi (Rooker), a former Marine and current enforcer for merciless mob boss Arnold Solomon (Willis), is tasked with eliminating two police officers who witnessed a failed assassination attempt, things quickly spiral out of control. When police officer Vanessa (Kurylenko), the second half of the loose end to be tied up, proves more difficult to catch than her partner, Tancredi begins to question not only the identity of the person he works for, but also the life choices that led him to this juncture.

Director Andrea Arnold records an intimate look at the daily life of an ordinary dairy cow named Luma living on an English farm. As viewers take in shots of Luma's life roaming pastures and being prodded by unpleasant machinery, the cow's role in the dairy supply chain becomes clearer than ever.

Minamata

As famed World War II American photojournalist W. Eugene Smith (Depp) descends into a solitary life, he is urged to visit Minamata, Japan, by Japanese translator Aileen (Minami), who hopes he could document the troubling allegations of disease and corporate greed. Agreeing to the task, Smith, with help from Aileen, soon uncovers a plot to cover up the decades-long mercury poisoning of the residents of the city of Minamata by the Chisso Corporation. Plagued by a severe neurological disease now known as Minamata disease, the residents of the city of the same name were slowly poisoned from the contaminated wastewater that had been dumped into the Minamata Bay, thus polluting its shellfish and fish. While investigating the Chisso Corporation, Smith is compelled to share this horrifying story with the world, just as he had shared gruesome details from the war's front lines decades earlier.
