After being assigned to write an article about beloved children's television personality Fred Rogers (Hanks), jaded award-winning investigative journalist Lloyd Vogel (Rhys) makes it his mission to expose Rogers' pleasant persona as an act. Vogel approaches the interview with skepticism due to the upheaval in his own personal life but is soon enamored by the TV star's dynamic, charming and good-natured approach to life. He begins to see how he can use Rogers' kind and thoughtful ways to mend his own relationships.
