Shortly after the fall of the Confederate army and the southern United States during the American Civil War, former Confederate soldier Capt. Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Hanks) travels around Texas as a newsreader, making his living reading the news of the day to local townsfolk. While traveling to a new town, Kidd comes across a murder scene and a lone child (Zengel) in the woods. Although she speaks no English, Kidd names the young girl Johanna and vows to find her surviving family. As the mismatched pair travel across the great expanse of Texas to reunite with their respective families, they must overcome many obstacles, both natural and man-made.
Following the events of "Sheep and Wolves," Grey the wolf (Halstead) finds himself the new leader of a village of peacefully co-existing sheep and wolves. When the Dark Wolves, led by Gark (Attaway), discover the harmonious village, they vow to destroy the non-violent relationship between the species. As Grey rallies the village to defend their home from the approaching Dark Wolves, he soon discovers there may be a saboteur in his quiet village.
Tortured from childhood by the death of his sister at the hand of a reckless driver, Peter (Schoenaerts) would rather work his frustrations out in the local boxing gym than through his working-class Philadelphia family's criminal business dealings. Having relied on the support of his cousin, Michael (Kinnaman), throughout the pair's lives, Peter quickly becomes embroiled in Michael's dangerous rise through the ranks of the family business.
