During the Second World War, Jan Zabinski (Heldenbergh), head of the Warsaw Zoo, and his wife, Antonina (Chastain), risk everything to save as many of the city's Jewish residents as they can during the Nazi occupation. While the couple uses what resources they have to try to save their neighbors and friends, Dr. Lutz Heck (Brühl), the director of Berlin's zoo, pillages the Warsaw Zoo and takes the most valuable animals back to Germany, killing those that remain. As the occupation of Poland stretches from days to months to years, the lives of the three animal lovers become more and more intertwined. This film is inspired by true events.

Convinced that the films, if they're real, would be worth a fortune, the trio sets out to prove their authenticity, which draws the attention of the still-at-large killer, and lures him out of retirement to protect his identity.
