The Martian

When a mission on Mars goes awry following a terrible storm, astronaut Mark Watney (Damon) is presumed dead and abandoned by his crew. Watney, however, survives the catastrophe and finds himself alone millions of miles from home with no way to let NASA know he's alive. Using only his wit, ingenuity and limited supplies, Watney must figure out how to contact both the team of NASA scientists on Earth, who are desperately looking for him, and his crew, who are planning a bold, near-impossible rescue mission.

Life

A young photographer, Dennis Stock (Pattinson), working for Magnum Photos wants to get the jump on a photo essay for Life magazine. His subject is an up-and-coming, free-spirited young actor named James Dean (DeHaan), and his editor, John G. Morris (Edgerton), gives him the go-ahead, despite some reservations. When Dennis and Jimmy meet, the pair quickly hit it off, forming an unlikely friendship. Based on the true story of Stock’s experience with Dean and Life magazine, this film explores a time of flux in the worlds of art and culture. With Dean at the forefront, Stock’s photos lead to some of the most iconic photographs in history.

Hotel Transylvania 2

A lot has changed at Hotel Transylvania, which has left behind its monsters-only policy and now welcomes humans to stay as guests. It’s also home to Dennis, Mavis (Gomez) and Johnny’s (Samberg) baby boy and Dracula’s (Sandler) grandson. Though a proud and loving "vampa," Drac is a little concerned that his half-human, half-monster grandson’s vampire side doesn’t seem to be coming through. When Mavis and Johnny go to visit Johnny’s parents in California, Drac and his monster pals set to work putting Dennis through a rigorous monster boot camp to bring out the vampire in him.

Shades of Blue, on Global, NBC

Galavant, on ABC

Now that he's unveiled Madalena's (Mallory Jansen) dark side, dashing hero Galavant (Joshua Sasse) continues his adventures in this season premiere. This season, he bonds with King Richard (Timothy Omundson) and tries to rekindle his romance with Isabella (Karen David).

New Releases for the week of January 3 - January 9

Sicario

After a raid on a group of suspected kidnappers, idealistic FBI Agent Kate Macer (Blunt) and her partner, Reggie Wayne (Kaluuya), are assigned to a task force headed by agents Matt Graver (Brolin) and Alejandro Gillick (Del Toro), a former Mexican prosecutor, in order to bring Mexican drug cartel boss Manuel Díaz (Saracino) to justice. Upon their arrival in Mexico, Macer and Wayne are given the task of escorting one of Díaz's officers stateside to interrogate him, but information recently gained from interrogations sets in motion a chain of violent events that shakes Macer's ideals and expectations to their very core.

Ashby

As part of a school assignment, nerdy 17-year-old Ed Wallis (Wolff) has to get to know and write an essay about an older person. He decides to write one about his seemingly boring neighbour, Ashby Holt (Rourke). His expectations are shattered when, much to his surprise, he learns Holt is not only a former CIA assassin, but is also dying -- he only has a few months to live. Having both seen and done a lot of terrible things throughout his life, Holt has decided to make peace with himself in his final months, and brings Ed along for the ride, teaching him some valuable life lessons along the way.

Infinitely Polar Bear

See what it takes to be a father with bipolar syndrome raising two kids by himself in this heartwarming film based on the director's own childhood. Cam Stuart (Ruffalo) is, simply put, a manic depressive mess. His wife, Maggie (Saldana), has left him, albeit temporarily, to study business in New York City, meaning he is stuck in Boston raising two very spirited young girls (Wolodarsky and Aufderheide) alone. In way over his head, Stuart spends two years learning the hard way to be a good parent.

Black Mass

Based on a true story, this film takes an in-depth look at the man who controlled the criminal underworld in Boston for decades. Starting in the mid-'70s, James “Whitey” Bulger (Depp) brought Boston to its knees thanks in part to friend -- and less-than-ethical FBI agent -- John Connolly (Edgerton). When a member of Bulger's gang is murdered by the mafia, Bulger becomes an FBI informant, feeding the agency information about the various criminal elements at work in the city. Meanwhile, he uses info given to him by Connolly to eliminate his opponents. However, after almost two decades of ruling the city, an internal investigation and front page story in the Boston Globe bring Bulger's empire crashing to the ground.

Dragon Blade

In ancient China, a legion of defecting soldiers from the Roman Empire, led by a general named Tiberius (Cusack), arrives at the gates of a village along the Silk Road. After a lukewarm reception results in a duel between Tiberius and the local captain of the guard, Huo An (Chan), Tiberius warns that the corrupt Consul Lucius (Brody), who killed his and Tiberius' father, is on his way to the village with an army of 100,000 to claim the Silk Road for themselves. Huo An and the Chinese join forces with both Tiberius' army and a ragtag group of other troops who have a stake in the Silk Road to fight back against Lucius.

Pawn Sacrifice

In 1972, at the very height of the Cold War, American chess prodigy Bobby Fischer (Maguire) played his Russian counterpart, Boris Spassky (Schreiber), in what would go on to be called the Match of the Century. For a month and a half, the two men challenged each other on the chess board in an epic battle of minds, attracting more attention than any other chess match in history, and helped distract the world from the frightening realities of the Cold War.
