At the base of Japan's Mount Fuji lies the famous Aokigahara Forest, a place that features prominently in Japanese folklore and is a popular destination for people with suicidal intentions. Some locals believe that the lost souls of those who have taken their lives still haunt the forest. When Sara's (Dormer) identical twin sister disappears into the forest, the police confess that they believe she has taken her own life. Unconvinced, Sara teams up with a handsome reporter named Aiden (Kinney) to journey deep into the woods in search of her sister. Despite the objections of their guide, Sara and Aiden leave the path and spend the night in the forest, and its horrifying reality begins to come to light.
