The classic Christmas tale is turned on its head when the whole Engel family comes together to celebrate the holidays. To make matters worse, a crippling snowstorm blows through town and knocks out the family's power. When strange and terrifying things begin to happen around the house, the family's Austrian grandmother, Omi (Stadler), tells them about Krampus, Santa Claus's sinister counterpart, according to Christmas tradition in parts of Europe. With the Engels now all but certain that Krampus is terrorizing them, it becomes clear that it's their lack of Christmas spirit that has drawn his ire.

Saul Ausländer (Röhrig) is a Jewish prisoner in Auschwitz, the Nazi concentration camp, where he is part of a team that burns dead prisoners. While handling the bodies of gas chamber victims, he comes across one that he believes is his son. Unable to burn the body, he convinces the prison's doctor (Zsótér) to let him bury it instead. For a proper burial, though, he needs to find a rabbi, a task much easier said than done under the watchful eyes of the Nazi guards.
