Q: We love "Downton Abbey," but the seasons only last seven or eight weeks. Why is it so short?

The basic problem is that "Downton Abbey" is a British show made for British TV, and the Brits make their shows short.

A season with episodes in the single digits ("Downton" started with seven, but later seasons have had nine) is the norm for British drama and comedy shows.

iHeartRadio Music Awards, on NBC

The stars celebrate the best music of the year with live performances, including unique duets and collaborations. This year, Iggy Azalea and Sam Smith lead the nominations with five each, while Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande each nabbed four.

The Imitation Game

The real life story of Second World War code-breaker Alan Turing is told in this Academy Award-winning biography. Although arrogant and difficult to work with, Turing (Cumberbatch) is a genius whose work on a new machine could eventually lead to cracking the "unbreakable" German Enigma code. However, behind-the-scenes politics and Soviet spies threaten to run his critical work off the rails, and his struggles to keep his illegal homosexuality a secret could spell the end to his career -- and to British hopes of decoding the Enigma and winning the war.

Director: Morten Tyldum. Stars: Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Rory Kinnear, Allen Leech, Matthew Beard, Charles Dance. 2014. 114 min. Drama.

 

Interstellar

A tale of a dystopian future and interstellar exploration comes to life in this Academy Award-winning film. While humanity has been struggling to survive on Earth following a decimating crop blight, a secret NASA project has been sending astronauts through a wormhole found near Saturn to explore a distant planetary system with hopes that one of the planets will be viable for humans to inhabit. A former NASA pilot (McConaughey) joins the mission and travels through the wormhole to recover the data that was gathered by an earlier mission. Meanwhile, back on Earth, his daughter (Chastain) has become a scientist with NASA, and her equations may upset the entire mission.

Outcast

A tale of the ruthlessness of imperial politics comes to life in this joint American-Chinese production. When the heir to the imperial throne dodges an assassination attempt by his disgraced older brother (On), he and his sister (Liu) are forced to go into hiding. With the help of two former crusaders (Cage, Christensen) who need to overcome their own personal demons, the prince sets out to depose his brother and take his rightful place upon the imperial throne.

The Bold and the Beautiful

Curious about the life her sister has been living in Los Angeles, Nicole finally gets some answers from Maya to questions she's been wondering about since childhood. Later, Nicole gets more insight into her sister's personal and professional life while observing her interactions with Rick. Now aware that Nicole is keeping her secret, Maya rescinds her request of her sister to move out and decides to work on their relationship. Brooke admits her recent struggle with loneliness after Katie gushes about her married life with Bill. She later shares her feelings with the group and thanks Deacon for all of his support during a 12-step meeting. After the meeting, Deacon confesses that he's been dealing with a temptation that doesn't include alcohol. During a Forrester staff meeting, Rick singles Ivy out by criticizing her performance in front of her coworkers, which makes Liam want to take control of the company even more. Bill becomes uncomfortable when he sees the nude portrait of Caroline that Ridge painted.

Days of Our Lives

Ben asks Abigail a question that could change their lives. Serena gets what she's after, but not before Nicole's suspicions are raised. Daniel starts to put the pieces together when Paige reveals to him that she once believed he had slept with her mom. After questioning JJ about the coat he borrowed last fall, Daniel confronts Jennifer about what happened between JJ and Eve. General Hospital

Ashley wonders if Billy is rushing into marriage with Chelsea because of Victoria, but Billy insists that he is getting married to the woman he loves. Sage tries to make friends with Faith, but Nick apologizes for his daughter when Faith doesn't respond well.
