Despite all of their bragging about being immortal, vampires sometimes die. Or at least their shows do.

When the current season wraps up in March on CW, that'll be it for "The Vampire Diaries": It's been canceled after eight seasons of undead/mortal romance and complicated vamp-family politics.

But rest assured, the show will go out on a high note. CW president Mark Pedowitz, speaking at the Television Critics Association press tour last month, promised "a fantastic season finale," and even hinted that former star Nina Dobrev ("Degrassi: The Next Generation") would return for the last episode.

Dobrev, once the show's main star, left after the sixth season (in case you've lost track, her character's in a supernatural coma), but there have been rumors since the summer that she will return for a grand goodbye.
