There are, as you may suspect, two answers to that question.

"Thank You for Being a Friend," the catchy and memorable theme song of the classic and memorable sitcom "The Golden Girls," is sung on the series by Cynthia Fee. And that was pretty much the size of her pop-culture footprint, as that was apparently her only claim to fame.

What many don't know, though, is that the song was a hit years before the girls shared their first cheesecake.

Songwriter and professional musician Andrew Gold's single-version of his song reached No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1978. It was released off his "All This and Heaven, Too" album. His previous hit, "Lonely Boy," actually charted higher, but didn't get the geriatric sex-humor bump to push it into the cultural long-term memory.

However, "Thank You for Being a Friend" wasn't his only flirtation with television. Gold returned to television in 1992 on another hit NBC sitcom, "Mad About You." This time, he was only appearing as a performer, doing the show's theme, "The Final Frontier." It was actually penned by series star Paul Reiser, with the help of famed record producer Don Was.

And if you're really interested, Gold is still working. Truly a child of the '60s, he released an album of new material in 2006 titled "Greetings From Planet Love," and has promised another new release in 2011 and a corresponding tour.
