One normal thing and two weird things -- so, business as usual for Kyle MacLachlan.

Starting with the normal thing, he's signed on for a regular role in the new series "Carol's Second Act," a CBS sitcom starring former "The Middle" star Patricia Heaton. That's about as normal a sentence as has ever been typed.

Now for the weird stuff: He'll also be playing U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt in a Norwegian historical-drama miniseries about that country's Princess Märtha and her role in the Second World War. "Atlantic Crossing" filmed over this past winter and so far only has distribution on Norwegian TV.

The other weird thing will at least be easier to find in North America. He has a supporting role in the feature film "Fonzo," another historical drama, but this one about the final year of Al Capone's life when, after 10 years in prison, he begins to suffer from dementia and is visited by the ghosts of his violent past.

It stars fellow weirdo Tom Hardy as Capone and promises to take a fairly loose approach to historical accuracy. Its score is being done by modern-day hip-hop star El-P, which is an odd choice for a period piece. MacLachlan will be playing Capone's doctor in the film, which is slated for release "later this year," according to writer/director/editor Josh Trank.
