He's been embodying the old British adage, "A change is as good as a rest."

Peter Capaldi has taken on a number of pretty sizable roles since giving up the mantle of The Doctor, and it's only been a bit over two years. The roles have all been literary, in one way or another, as is often the case for actors with high profiles who can pick and choose what they appear in.

He did a voice role in the 2018 Netflix adaptation of the classic children's story "Watership Down" and voiced Rabbit in the smash-hit Disney film "Christopher Robin" (a continuation of the Winnie the Pooh stories), also in 2018.

But his biggest roles are yet to come. He appears in the upcoming, big-screen Dickens adaptation "The Personal History of David Copperfield," and has an as-yet-unannounced role in the mega-budget comic book movie "Suicide Squad 2," due out in 2021. (I know that calling comic books "literary" is a bit of a stretch for some people, but I'm doing it.)

This all seems like a lot, considering he's coming off a grueling, full-time TV role. But in the interviews he gave after announcing his exit, he suggested that his fatigue was more with the role itself than with the level of work.

"I began to wonder how many different ways can I find to say, 'The time vortex is going to open up and destroy the entire universe as we know it, unless we blow up that model spaceship over there,'" he told the New York Times back in 2017. "It concerned me that if I did more, yes, I'd be able to do it, but I'd just be phoning it in. And I didn't ever want to be in that situation."
