Q: What has happened to "Scorpion"? It's been pre-empted and now "Elementary" is in its time-slot?

"Pre-empted" is, unfortunately, putting it mildly. "Scorpion" has been canceled.

The show has been underperforming in the ratings for a while now, so the decision wasn't a big surprise to people who track these things.

Indeed, even series star Katharine McPhee, who played Paige, the more socially well-adjusted member of Team Scorpion, seemed less than surprised. She took to Twitter just hours after the cancellation was made official to offer a resigned farewell.

"Thank you so much to CBS for this journey, to my awesome castmates and crew whom I learned from every day and to all the wonderful 'Scorpion' fans for being so passionate about what we created. We'll always be a family."

It helps that she's keeping pretty busy lately -- she's starring in a hit Broadway musical ("Waitress"), and has been picking up other screen gigs in her off time from "Scorpion" (such as the indie film "Louisiana Caviar," released earlier this year).

"Scorpion" lead Elyes Gabel has built up less of a cushion to fall on. He's seemingly given most of his time to the show since it debuted in 2014.

Gabel played Walter O'Brien, an "eccentric genius" tasked with pulling together a team of fellow brains to tackle the "complex, high-tech threats of the modern age." The show made it an impressive four seasons before getting the axe, despite, as I said before, never pulling in the kind of numbers CBS expects.

As you say, it's been replaced on the schedule with "Elementary," now in its sixth season. This is, however, the first time the network has used it as a spring replacement.
