"The Curse of Oak Island" is a show of mysteries: Is the legendary treasure off the coast of Nova Scotia just a centuries-old hoax? Does a seventh person have to die before it's found? Is Rick Lagina's hair naturally a different color than his beard, or does he dye it? Maybe no one else is wondering about that last one, but still, it's fitting that the show's future is itself shrouded in mystery.

Its third season finale aired back in February, and the network hasn't announced a fourth-season renewal yet. All we can do is speculate based on bits of evidence, much like the show's treasure hunters.

The most important factor going in favor of a renewal is the fact that they still haven't found the treasure (sorry to those who haven't seen the third-season finale yet, but if they had found it, this would all be moot). Also in favor is the fact that the show is a hit for History -- it's generally one of the most-watched cable shows on its night, and was one of the biggest reality shows on cable this year

However (and again, apologies to those who aren't caught up), the recent finale did provide the answer to a question the show had been asking for quite a while -- the kind of answer that could serve as an end to the show, if the crew or the network wanted it to (that's all I'll say about it).

It's hard to say when we'll get solid answers about the show's future. The last two seasons have premiered in November, so History could still sit on its hands for a while before making a decision. In the meantime, the mystery continues, as it does for the Oak Island treasure.
