Q&A

Q: My husband and I have been enjoying reruns of the "Daniel Boone" series starring Fess Parker. The child actor who plays Israel Boone on the show is Darby Hinton, I believe. Do you have any information on this particular young actor?

Unfortunately there's not a lot of information about him.

"Daniel Boone," one of the child actor's earliest roles, remains by far his biggest.

He was just seven when he first appeared as Israel Boone, son of the legendary American pioneer, on the NBC adventure series, which ran from 1964 to 1970. However, he was already working in Hollywood, starting in commercials at just six months of age and going on to small TV roles in such shows as "Mr. Ed" and "Wagon Train."

The push into acting most likely came from his father, Ed, who was also an actor. Ed did a large number of mostly small, uncredited roles (for example, he was the taskmaster in 1956's "The Ten Commandments") in his all-too-brief career, which was cut short by a plane crash in 1958.

Fatherless just after his first birthday, biographies have said that young Darby Hinton later took to his on-screen dad, Fess Parker, as a sort of adoptive father and the two are said to have remained close right up until Parker's death earlier this year.

In demand as a child actor, Hinton kept busy even in his off time from "Daniel Boone." He did a few one-off TV spots during this time, but also starred in the 1968 two-part Disney special "Boomerang, Dog of Many Talents."

But as is usually the case, he was unable to translate his childhood success into a grown-up career. Though the roles haven't been very large since "Daniel Boone," he's never been far from the screen.

He last appeared on film in 2003, playing a dad in the family-friendly comedy "Just 4 Kicks," starring Dylan and Cole Sprouse, members of the new generation of child stars.

The same year, he appeared in the made-for-TV comedy film "Recipe for Disaster," opposite Lesley Ann Warren and Devon Werkheiser.
