Sadly, you can insert your favorite crime-movie cliche here -- "TNT whacks 'Mob City,'" "TNT puts 'Mob City' on ice," "'Mob City' sleeps with the fishes," etc. The point is, TNT canceled it.

The network had high hopes for the series. It was created by Frank Darabont, the hotshot Hollywood filmmaker who wrote and directed 1994's "The Shawshank Redemption" and 1999's "The Green Mile," among many others.

He more recently had some success on the small screen by helping create a little show some people like called "The Walking Dead" (just kidding, it's one of the biggest shows on TV right now).

To add to its pedigree, "Mob City" was based on the bestselling non-fiction book "L.A. Noir" by John Buntin.

All of this seemed to make the show a good bet, but it just didn't catch.

TNT was surprisingly candid in announcing its cancelation. "Although the ratings of the limited series haven't warranted more hours, we are eager to work with Frank Darabont again and were delighted to bring the vibrant world of 'Mob City' to life."

This can be considered frank because it's suspected that networks often use the "limited series" tag so that if the show fails, they can just say it was supposed to be a miniseries.
