The version of "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" that ended season 5 was by the Ruby Friedman Orchestra. The good news is it is available on their album "Songs of the Demimonde." The bad news is that the album's not available on CD.

So far, the album -- technically more of an EP, since its seven songs clock in at only 28 minutes in total -- is only available digitally, on iTunes, Spotify and elsewhere.

However, an announcement on the band's website said they'll be releasing a full album, to be titled "Fugue in L.A. Minor," which will also include the track. There's no word on whether that will be released on CD, but it seems more likely.

As you point out, Ruby Friedman was just one of the singers to do a version of "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" in a season finale of "Justified." Indeed, it became something of a tradition on the show, with all but one season ending with the song.

It's fitting for a couple of reasons. The show is set in Harlan County, and each season generally ends with a character at least maybe not getting out alive.

Friedman's version was used at the end of season 5 because it was Ava who was in trouble.

"I had as a goal from early on using a female cover of the song when a season would end with a dilemma for Ava," showrunner Graham Yost told "Entertainment Weekly." "It really is the question: We know it's gonna come down to Raylan and Boyd, but what's gonna happen to Ava? And will she survive this story? Or will she be killed? It felt like almost more than any other time we've used it, it was appropriate."

Other versions of the song by Brad Paisley and Dave Alvin have been used in previous seasons. The song was originally written by Darrell Scott, himself a Kentucky native.
