Q&A

Q: I've started watching "The Nevers" and I'm really enjoying it. It has a fun, British-period-piece feel to it that I always enjoy. I'm curious who plays Lord Massen. He looks really familiar.

You aren't making this easy. If you're a fan of British historical dramas, you could know English actor Pip Torrens from just about anywhere. He has 185 entries on his screen resume, and it seems like the vast majority of those are period pieces.

So I'm going to take a stab in the dark here -- the "Poldark," actually. (Sorry.) Torrens' biggest recent role was a recurring spot on that 18th-century class-conscious drama, playing the cold-hearted banker, Cary Warleggan.

Around the same time, he also had a recurring spot on Netflix's "The Crown," playing private secretary Tommy Lascelles.

Those are the most likely places you know him from, but there are loads of other possibilities.

If you're more attracted to the lighthearted elements of HBO's "The Nevers" ("The Crown" and "Poldark" aren't exactly light), then maybe you know him -- a much younger version of him -- as the perpetually lovesick Bingo Little on the early-'90s comedy series "Jeeves and Wooster."

If you're more into the adventure elements, however, you may have remembered Torrens from the 2014 true-life miniseries "Fleming," in which he played the romantic rival to the titular Ian Fleming (author and creator of the James Bond character).

Of course, Torrens isn't just a one-note guy, so maybe you don't know him from a TV series at all.

He has had big-screen roles as well, most notably (and lucratively) playing Colonel Kaplan in the mega-budget flick "Star Wars: Episode VII -- The Force Awakens" (2015) -- about as far from a British period piece as you can get.
