Q&A

Q: I saw an ad for a battery, and it looked like Mike Piazza was trying to start his car. Was that him? It was an ad for an auto-parts store.

There's been a surprising amount of buzz about this, many people wondering whether or not that's retired baseball great Mike Piazza schlepping car batteries for Autozone.

It is indeed the Met himself (or former Met anyway), looking disgruntled at this car that sadly is not equipped with a Duralast car battery, which are available at his nearest Autozone location.

At the moment, his nearest Autozone location is in Miami, Fla., where Piazza is retired and reportedly enjoying his new job as a dad.

"I'm an involved parent," he told the New York Times. "I love the game, but that is such a full-time job."

Miami is something of an odd choice for him to settle. His baseball career took him all over the country, playing in Los Angeles with the Dodgers from 1992 to 1998, with the New York Mets from 1998 to 2005, the San Diego Padres in 2006 and the Oakland Athletics in 2007, so if he wanted sun California seems a more likely place.

However, technically he was a Florida Marlin, though for just seven days in 1998 before they traded him on to the Mets. He never had a chance to play for either of the teams in his home state of Pennsylvania.

For the real commercial-trivia junkies, it's worth noting that he's appearing in the commercial with pro actor Ernie Macias. If that name doesn't sound familiar don't be too hard on yourself -- his biggest screen role thus far has been in a re-enactment scene on one episode of the Animal Planet series "I'm Alive," playing "Mexican pharmacist." He's likely better known for his stage work with the L.A. improve troupe The Cartel, or in his other commercial work in spots for Carfax and Best Buy.
