Q&A

Q: I just saw the movie "Ex Machina," which starred an actor named Domhnall Gleeson. He looks a lot like the actor Brendan Gleeson. Are they related?

They are father and son (well, son and father, in the order you present them).

The Irish actors have actually been able to work together a number of times, starting with Domhnall's very first film, the 2004 short "Six Shooter" (he played a bit role, while his dad was the star). The biggest film they teamed up for was one of the Harry Potter films, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" -- Brendan played Prof. Alastor Moody, while Domhnall played Bill Weasley, Ron's older brother.

Indeed, it seems that the Irish film industry is a pretty tight-knit, family-oriented group. The Gleesons most recently worked together in the 2014 film "Calvary," which was written and directed by John Michael McDonagh, brother of Martin McDonagh, who wrote and directed "Six Shooter."

Unfortunately, Brendan had nothing to do with 2015's "Ex Machina" (unfortunately for the film, that is, since he's a highly respected, multi-award-winning star).
