You're getting ahead of yourself a little here. Actually, you're getting ahead of Legendary Pictures.
There are no details available about the release of "Pacific Rim 2" because we don't know for sure if it'll ever be released.
The latest news is that Guillermo del Toro, the action-horror-fantasy auteur who wrote and directed the original "Pacific Rim" in 2013, has finished a script for the sequel and submitted it to the studio. However, even he isn't entirely optimistic about its chances.
"Budget and script went in," he wrote on Twitter last month. "No answers yet. If anything happens, I will post."
This, of course, suggests that perhaps nothing will happen. In fact, it's a distinct possibility, given that the project had been called off as recently as September.
It was never a sure thing. Even though the original grossed more than $400 million worldwide, it cost nearly $200 million to make. That's still a pretty good return, but it's certainly worrying, since sequels usually don't earn as much. And the fact that del Toro mentioned the budget in his brief post suggests he might be worried about the money side of things.
That would be fair, since the budget was one of the reasons cited when the studio said it was canceling the sequel in September. Fortunately for fans, del Toro is pushing ahead with it anyway, perhaps hoping to win over the studio with a great script.
But whatever script he turns in will be expensive -- I don't think anyone's found a cheap way to make a movie about people in giant robot suits fighting equally giant underwater monsters.
The original plan was to release the film in August 2017, but even just with the delays so far, that will likely have to be pushed back if it does get picked up.
