The film you're looking for is 1949's "Lust for Gold." Though the DVD version, released just a few years ago, seems to be out of print now, you can still find it if you're willing to hunt.

The film was very loosely based on the true story of treasure hunter Barry Storm and his 1945 autobiography "Thunder Gods Gold." Indeed, the film comes with a prologue in which the governor of Arizona attests to the "true facts" behind the film.

You can see it for yourself, if you can find the movie. It's rerun from time to time on the movie channels (the premium cable channel Encore Western has been particularly fond of it), though it's not scheduled any time soon.

Even though the DVD is out of print, copies are still available from reputable online resellers, such as ones on eBay.com and Amazon.com (as opposed to the dodgy, pirated-copy sellers that flourish online as well).

The DVD version was released in 2005 along with a batch of other Columbia westerns, including the Oscar-nominated 1966 film "The Professionals." However a "New York Times" review called "Lust for Gold" the "unexpected highlight" of the bunch.
