If you've got seven seasons, you're good. And if you think that number seems low, you're not alone.

Entertainment Weekly reporter Benjamin Svetkey spent some time on the show's set while they were filming the series finale back in 1994, and many of the people involved were candid in saying that they didn't think it should've been canceled.

"I haven't been given any reason that holds water," said Jonathan Frakes, who played Will Riker on the modern-classic space opera.

The cast had reportedly all been contracted for an eighth season, so it came as a surprise to all of them.

But Paramount, which produced the series (it never had a single network -- the show was produced for syndication), had its reasons.

"The bottom line is that a successful feature-film franchise can be more profitable than a TV series," said Paramount executive Joel Berman. "We thought it was time to launch 'Next Generation' as a movie franchise, and we didn't think we could do the television series at the same time. Why would people go to movie theaters to see 'Next Generation' if new episodes were available on TV every week?"

So if you're looking for a scapegoat (or you're looking to really complete your boxed set), look to the subsequent movies.

"Star Trek: Generations," the first big-screen "Star Trek" movie to feature the "Next Generation" cast, was released in November 1994, just six months after the series finale aired. Three more followed -- "First Contact" (1996), "Insurrection" (1998) and "Nemesis" (2002).
