As a matter of fact, the gravel-voiced Sutherland boys have appeared in three films together, including Kiefer's first film and his most recent one.

Kiefer was just 17 years old when his dad brought him on to the set of 1983's "Max Dugan Returns" for the coolest ever take-your-kid-to-work day. The young Sutherland played a very small role in that film, which also has the honor of being the big-screen debut of another '80s heartthrob, Matthew Broderick.

His role is quite a bit meatier in "Forsaken," which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival back in September, ahead of a wider release this February. In it, Donald and Kiefer actually get to play father and son, but in the Wild West, so it doesn't hit too close to home. Their characters are trying to get reacquainted after years of estrangement, while land-grabbers besiege their community. The film was produced and shot in their native Canada.

In between those two films, they did the hugely successful Grisham-novel adaptation, "A Time to Kill" (1996). However, as was also the case with "Max Dugan Returns," the two didn't actually appear in any scenes together.

After finishing shooting on "Forsaken," Kiefer told the Toronto Star that he regretted not getting to share the screen with his dad more often. "I wish we'd made a few films together. I wish I had worked with him when he was younger, when I was younger."

That sounds a little wistful, but it's not like they'll never have the chance again. Though he's now 80 years old, Donald is still hard at work. He has three films due out next year -- the family drama "Milton's Secret" and the indie comedies "Basmati Blues" and "Measure of a Man."

Kiefer is taking it easier than his old man, with just one film on the go: he was just cast in the indie drama "Beat-Up Little Seagull," opposite Michelle Pfeiffer.
