Q&A

Q: In the early '80s there was a movie on HBO called "Harry Tracy" starring Robert Duvall. Was this ever released on VHS or DVD? I so enjoyed the movie and would like to see it again.

The only film I could find that seemed to fit the bill was the 1982 film "Harry Tracy, Desperado," but the star of that one was actually Bruce Dern.

The two have often been on filmmakers' lists for the same roles - Dern claims Francis Ford Coppola personally asked him to test for the role in "The Godfather" that eventually went to Robert Duvall - and they certainly share a resemblance, and a taste for gruff characters.

"Harry Tracy, Desperado" was released on both VHS and DVD, but both are now out of print. They're still available online at various places, but don't expect to see them in stores.

Also going under the title "Harry Tracy: The Last of the Wild Bunch," the film was actually a Canadian production about a real-life American outlaw. Tracy was said to have been part of the Wild Bunch gang that also included outlaw legends Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

The film was notable for having been one of only two acting appearances by folk-singing great Gordon Lightfoot. He played a U.S. marshal named Morrie Nathan in the film. Six years later he appeared in a late-era episode of the classic '80s drama "Hotel."
