Q&A

Q: Did Colin Farrell star in "Ballykissangel"? I saw a DVD boxed set and it looked like him on the cover, but I've seen the show before and didn't know he was in it.

Colin Farrell had a supporting role on two later seasons of the show, but a pair of circumstances conspired to put his face front and center on both seasons' boxed sets.

The first is that the show went through major cast changes when Farrell arrived, with its previous main star (the focal point on the early seasons' boxed sets) departing.

The second circumstance is that he's Colin Farrell.

"Ballykissangel" was originally a fish-out-of-water dramedy about an English priest (played by Stephen Tompkinson) who is dispatched to work in a small Irish village.

But by the end of Season 3, the fish left, and the show no longer had a single star on the cast.

Enter Colin Farrell, but he was just one more member of the large ensemble (he played Danny Byrne, estranged nephew of longtime supporting character Eamon).

Just a couple of years later, of course, he would become a megastar. And so when the BBC did a full-series DVD release a few years after the show left the air, Farrell's face got a more prominent position on the box than his role may have warranted.
