Q&A

Q: Could you tell me when "Gilmore Girls" first aired? I don't remember it. Now it plays in reruns and I find it at times quite cute and fun. What happened to the people who starred in it?

"Gilmore Girls" premiered on Oct. 5, 2000, on The WB network, which was the precursor to today's CW. It became one of The WB's flagship shows and was taken over to CW when that network was created in 2006, but ended a year later.

So much has "happened" to the stars (and supporting stars) of that show that it's hard to know where to begin, but it makes the most sense to start with the "Girls" themselves.

The Gilmores in the title were single mother Lorelai (played by Lauren Graham) and her teenage daughter Rory (Alexis Bledel). Both have been busy since the show ended.

Graham spent a few years trying the big screen on for size (appearing in such big-budget films as "Evan Almighty" in 2007 and "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" in 2009) before finding another TV show to star in. She's spent the past four years starring in NBC's dramedy "Parenthood."

Bledel has gone the opposite route, dabbling in TV but committing herself to film. She seems equally committed to shedding the nice-kid image she developed on "Gilmore Girls," appearing mostly in fairly dark indie pictures in the years since.

It's actually a process Bledel started while the show was still on the air, when she appeared in the incredibly dark (thematically as well as visually) comic book film "Sin City" (2005).

But a show's supporting players can be just as important as its stars.

Melissa McCarthy's recent run of Hollywood hits (such as 2011's "Bridesmaids" and 2013's "Identity Thief" and "The Heat") has eclipsed memories of her as supportive best friend Sookie St. James on "Gilmore Girls."

Rory's sometime boyfriend Dean was played by Jared Padalecki, who left the show in 2005 to start his own series on the same network, "Supernatural," which is still going strong in its 10th season.
