Q&A

Q: Catherine Bell has long been one of my favorite performers. I have enjoyed her TV work since the "JAG" days and especially in "Army Wives." When that show ended, I thought she had a contract for a new show. Did it ever get made?

It's fair that you missed Catherine Bell's new show -- it came and went very quickly, and with little fanfare, from Hallmark Channel's schedule. But it's coming back.

Bell stars in "Good Witch" as, well, a good witch. She lives in the small town (this is Hallmark Channel, after all) of Middleton with her daughter, who shares her mother's magical powers.

As I said, the show didn't get much of a splash in the media, but that might have something to do with the fact that it's not really clear when it started. The problem there is that, like some other Hallmark shows, it started as a series of TV movies, only later transitioning into a regular series.

The regular series premiered in late February. It had just eight episodes and was gone by April (another reason why you might not know it ever happened), but it was a hit for the network, and so it received a second-season order before the first even finished.

The second season will once again be a sort of telefilm-series hybrid. The series premiere will be a two-hour special airing in the fall, while the rest of the show won't air until early 2016. Hallmark programming executive Michelle Vicary called the fall premiere "an early treat to our beloved fans."

It makes sense that Hallmark would tend towards TV movies -- it's how it made its name on TV, after all. Before it ever had a channel, it was producing popular made-for-TV movies for the broadcast networks.
