Q: I was wondering about the movie "Murder By Death": I know it's supposed to be spoofing various famous detectives, but which ones specifically? I only picked out Peter Falk's character, who is supposed to be Sam Spade.

Author:
Adam Thomlison / TV Media

The 1976 spoof comedy "Murder By Death," penned by the great playwright Neil Simon, is built on the classic mystery setup of several people in a mansion together, one of whom is a murderer. However, in this case, it plays it for laughs, as the guests are all famous fictional detectives.

If you're familiar with the original stories and films, then yes, Peter Falk's character, Sam Diamond, is a pretty clear homage to Dashiell Hammett's literary detective Sam Spade (of "The Maltese Falcon" fame).
