It's been said that there "ain't no cure for the summertime blues," and man, does that ever ring true some days. The shimmering heat and the unbearable humidity, the screaming kids and the biting bugs, there are times when it all just starts to feel unbearable.

Luckily, summer is also barbecue season, and I sure as heck don't know of any better cure for the blues than a nice, big cut of meat slowly cooking in the backyard (especially if that grill comes with a nice cold beer).

It's in that spirit of summer that Travel Channel is bringing us a new show that's all about the best that barbecue has to offer. "Underground BBQ Challenge" launches on Tuesday, July 15, and you can bet that I'll be sitting in front of my TV with a bib around my neck that evening.

Hosted by the loveable G. Garvin, "Underground BBQ Challenge" will follow the acclaimed chef as he travels from community to community around the U.S. of A., challenging two teams of local grill masters to go head-to-head against each other.

The prizes for the winners are pretty smokin' — $10,000 is a lot of cold, hard cash — but even better is the reputation that comes with winning a contest like this. Competitive barbecuing is serious business, and reputations can be made or broken over brisket.

While taste may normally rule all at the end of the day, these competitors will need to step up their games a bit more if they want to come out on top. Garvin and two local judges will be the ones picking the winners, and they're also looking for creative cooking methods and awesome presentation on these dishes.

It's enough to make any barbecue pro sweat -- as if the summertime heat isn't already enough. Garvin's presence may crank up the heat even more. He's an acclaimed chef, has hosted a number of popular cooking shows and has published award-winning cookbooks that have made cooking simple and easy for home cooks everywhere.

This summer, though, it's not about Garvin: it's about the barbecue. "Underground BBQ Challenge" looks like the perfect cure for the summertime blues, and its medicine starts flowing Tuesday, July 15, on Travel Channel.
