It's no easy task being a teacher.

I'm not just talking about the countless school teachers here, but about anyone who educates us. It's not easy to take something complicated and boil it down to its basic elements so that just about anyone can understand it. Some people are good teachers; others, not so much.

Martha Stewart, though, is a natural, as anyone who's watched her on TV or read one of her books knows. After spending years building up a lifestyle empire (and following a brief run-in with the law), the domestic goddess has been spending some time doing what she does best: teaching.

"Martha Stewart's Cooking School" airs weekends on PBS, and it's a delight to watch, whether you're an experienced home cook or just starting out on your own culinary journey. Each week's 30-minute episode has a focus on a different cooking technique or classic dish or basic ingredient, and with her step-by-step instructions and soothing explanations, Stewart can have even the biggest kitchen klutz cooking with confidence.

Now in its third season, "Martha Stewart's Cooking School" is certainly Stewart in her element. Inspired by her book of the same name, watching an episode is almost like sitting in a class being taught by your favorite teacher, one who can always make you understand the subject, no matter how tricky it might seem at first.

Its focus may be on teaching basic skills, but by no means does that imply that there's nothing here for us more experienced home cooks. Much like sharing recipes, sharing techniques and tips is something we all do with one another, and Stewart is no exception. The episode subjects are deliberately broad: the first season included "Eggs," "Roasting" and "Butchering," while the second season had "Pasta," "Grains" and "Preserving." With topics as broad as that, it's almost guaranteed that every episode will have something new for every home cook.

To look at "Martha Stewart's Cooking School" and think that it's just a show for beginners is to do it a disservice. This is Stewart in her element, doing what she did to make herself famous in the first place: teaching. Check your local PBS listings and book a class with one of the best.
