Shows about police officers have been a staple of the prime-time landscape for many years, and they seem to be back with a vengeance lately. While cop dramas are once again in vogue, one hit series takes a look at the lighter side of police work.

Ransom, on CBS

Luke Roberts stars as Eric Beaumont, a world-renowned crisis negotiator who is called in to resolve difficult kidnap cases. The drama is inspired by the real-life work of crisis negotiator Laurent Combalbert and his partner, Marwan Mery.

Q: I've just started reading Alan Furst's spy novels, and I really enjoy them. Have any been made into movies? They seem well suited for it.

Author:
Adam Thomlison / TV Media

Period war dramas with a bit of romance and a good deal of intrigue do seem like obvious mines for film material, but oddly, only one of Furst's novels has been filmed. His 2008 novel "Spies of Warsaw" got the screen treatment in 2013, but as a miniseries, not a movie.

As the network that brought us such TV behemoths as "Mad Men," "Breaking Bad" and "The Walking Dead," AMC has set the prime-time bar pretty high. Any new programming to the cabler's roster has a lot to live up to, and there's no doubt that the showrunners for "The Son," with its A-list headliner and high-caliber source material, are well aware of this fact.

Imaginary Mary, on ABC

After fiercely independent career woman Alice (Jenna Elfman) meets the man of her dreams, she's shocked when her imaginary friend from childhood suddenly reappears to offer her advice. The new comedy also features Rachel Dratch as the voice of Mary.

Q: Recently, Hallmark aired "Chance at Romance" with Erin Krakow and Ryan McPartlin. What other films has McPartlin been in, and where was "Chance at Romance" filmed?

Author:
Adam Thomlison / TV Media

Ryan McPartlin's handsome face, chiseled frame, bright-white smile and deep and rumbling voice make him a natural fit for romantic-comedy telefilms. In fact, I can say without exaggeration that he's so handsome it's funny.

When he made the long trip from Los Angeles to the suburbs of Los Angeles -- specifically Moorpark and Santa Susana -- to shoot 2013's "Chance at Romance," he'd already played the leading man in two telefilms, and he's gone on to do six more so far.
