In order to beat the rush of new series that arrive on television each spring and fall, hopeful pilots are given flashy names that showrunners and producers hope will draw eyes from their countless competitors. Most of the time, these titles reveal something important about the premise behind the show, although the two concepts can end up with only a peripheral attachment to each other.

The series "Cougar Town" has moved so far from its initial premise that each episode's title card from season 2 onwards includes a joke about it in the subtitle. Episode 2 of season 4, for example, reads "The letters in...'Cougar Town' can be rearranged to spell 'Taco Rug Now' (which also makes no sense)." Despite the somewhat nonsensical title, "Cougar Town" attracted enough attention to score six seasons and airs a new episode of its swan song Tuesday, Feb. 24, on TBS.

"Cougar Town" first appeared on ABC in September 2009 and followed recently divorced mother Jules Cobb (Courteney Cox, "Friends") as she shakes off the post-split funk and starts dating again. As the title implies, the objects of Jules' affection throughout most of season 1 are closer in age to her teenage son than to herself. That premise didn't even last through a whole season, however, as Jules begins dating a fellow divorcee, Grayson Ellis (Josh Hopkins, "G.I. Jane," 1997), before the first season finale.

There was some serious discussion about renaming the series after the freshman season wrapped. Some research indicated that potential viewers who enjoyed screenings passed over "Cougar Town" based on disinterest in the title. Leading up to the season 2 premiere, two potential titles, "The Sunshine State" and "Grown Ups" were rejected based on their similarity to other contemporary productions.

In 2011 and again the following year, there was a flurry of excitement over renewed discussion of renaming the series. Titles such as "Friends with Beverages" and "Wine Time" were put forward as more relevant options with no luck. Even after "Cougar Town" moved from ABC to TBS following season 3, there was no change, although the title has continued to be poked at in promos.

While ABC didn't officially cancel "Cougar Town," the series was shopped around following Jules and Grayson's season 3 finale wedding. According to co-creator Bill Lawrence in a May 2012 tweet, the network change happened because the show could get more publicity and a longer season at TBS than what ABC was offering. With the switch, Lawrence and Kevin Biegel, who were the show's creators and showrunners from season 1 to 3, took on the role of executive producers, handing the reins over to new showrunner Ric Swartzlander.

The primary characters in "Cougar Town" are collectively referred to as "The Cul-de-Sac Crew." With the exception of Jules' former co-worker Laurie Keller (Busy Phillips, "ER") and ex-husband Bobby Cobb (Brian Van Holt, "Ascension"), all the members of the group live on the same street. The other members include Jules' now-adult son, Travis Cobb (Dan Byrd, "Easy A," 2010), and husband Grayson, as well as creepy neighbor-turned-creepy friend Tom Gazelian (Bob Clendenin, "Scrubs"). Rounding out the group are Jules' best friend Ellie Torres (Christa Miller, "The Drew Carey Show") and her husband Andy (Ian Gomez, "Wake," 2009).

The entire Cul-de-Sac Crew gathers regularly at Jules' house for activities, which almost always include drinking generous portions of red wine. They also discuss various life events that are occurring and the many varied relationships the characters get themselves into. It's one part family gathering, one part group therapy and one part frat party, all marinated until it reaches a new level of hilarity.

The youngest main character, Travis, turns 21 in season 4, and his birthday ushers in significant changes for the character. As he can now legally drink, Travis begins to be included in The Cul-de-Sac Crew's frequent gatherings. And in a plotline that almost makes "Cougar Town" make sense as a title, Travis's longtime crush on Laurie, who is nine years his senior, begins to be reciprocated.

Shortly after Laurie's army boyfriend realizes she is preoccupied with Travis and dumps her, Laurie admits she likes him and the pair finally go on a date. Over the course of the following season, Travis and Laurie's relationship progresses much further, culminating in the season 5 finale. It is revealed, through a rather convoluted series of events, that Laurie is pregnant with Travis's child.

Season 6 has been confirmed as the final season and is likely to spend a fair amount of time addressing how each character reacts to the monumental changes taking place around them. Travis and Laurie are first-time parents, and Grayson wants kids but Jules is having enough trouble adjusting to being a grandmother, not to mention worrying about her aging father.

Pour yourself a glass of wine and settle in for a new episode of "Cougar Town" as its final season continues Tuesday, Feb. 24, on TBS.
