Katy Perry is hosting this year's Teen Choice Awards
SURFER 'GURL': It seems quite fitting that the woman famous for her song "California Gurls" will be hosting an awards show that hands out surfboards to its winners.
Fox recently announced that pop-music sensation Katy Perry will take the reins of its Teen Choice 2010 awards ceremony, which will air on the network Monday, Aug. 9. Perry will also perform during the broadcast, which honors the year's most popular teen icons working in the music, film, television, sports and fashion industries.
The singer is also nominated for several of this year's awards, including Choice Music Single and Choice Summer Song (both for "California Gurls").
The show has become known for its unusual award categories, which include Choice Celebrity Smile, Choice Music Hook Up, Choice TV Villain and Choice Scene Stealer, among others.
Perry won't be the only superstar taking the stage at this year's ceremony. Fox has also revealed that David Archuleta, Zac Efron, Kristen Bell, Jim Parsons and the Kardashian sisters, among others, are scheduled to appear during the two-hour broadcast event.
Perry is somewhat of a Teen Choice veteran now. She was nominated once in 2008 and then three more times in 2009, but has yet to take home a surfboard. But with six nominations this year, her chances keep getting better.
Teen Choice winners are based on results of a popular vote among 13- to 19-year-olds. The surfboard has been the prize since the awards show launched in 1999, but the design changes every year and encompasses the event's summer theme.
PAGING DR. TAMBLYN: TV fans suffering from the summertime rerun blues will soon be able to check into Princeton Plainsboro for a much-needed dose of witty drama. Upon arrival, however, they'll notice that star Hugh Laurie's Dr. Gregory House has a new sidekick: Amber Tamblyn.
Tamblyn will join the cast of Fox's "House" for a multi-episode arc when the series returns with a new season on Monday, Sept. 20.
The Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated actress will portray an aggressive medical student who is brilliant beyond her years and experience. Dr. House hires Tamblyn's character to join his diagnostic team, despite the fact that she has yet to finish medical school and legally cannot practice yet.
The two may initially seem like their personalities are a perfect match, but as the guest arc progresses, Tamblyn's character will begin to question the way House pushes ethical and moral boundaries while treating his patients.
Tamblyn became a household name when she starred as the title character in "Joan of Arcadia," a role that earned her multiple award nominations. She has done a lot of other TV work as well, including roles on "General Hospital," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "CSI: Miami" and "The Unusuals."
She's found quite a bit of crossover success in films, too, including "The Ring" (2002), "The Grudge 2" (2006) and the two "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" flicks.
She also has a couple of big movie projects in the works. She'll costar with Colin Firth and Orlando Bloom in the upcoming drama "Main Street," which will hit theatres later this year. She's also been cast in "127 Hours" from writer/director Danny Boyle (2008's "Slumdog Millionaire").
LET THE BIDDING BEGIN: To some people, warm August weekends are best spent picnicking in a park, relaxing at the beach or going antique shopping.
But to "Lost" aficionados and Hollywood-memorabilia collectors, the weekend of Aug. 21-22 will be about one thing: an auction.
For these two days only, the Barker Hangar at the Santa Monica Airport in California will be converted to a live auction house as bidders vie for a piece of one of Hollywood's most original shows.
The event, ponderously dubbed "'Lost' The Official Show Auction and Exhibit," will give fans a chance to take home of piece of the show, from various set decorations, props and wardrobe items.
ABC Studios will conduct the auction alongside partner Profiles in History, an organization that has established itself as "the world's largest auctioneer of original Hollywood memorabilia," according to its website.
For those who can't make it to the auction, an online one will also be operating to coincide with the live event.
However, the in-person experience will be a real treat for fans, since the exhibition portion will feature a Dharma van and pieces of the wrecked Oceanic Flight 815 plane, among other large set pieces. Organizers will also be offering sneak-peek screenings of the DVD bonus material that will be released with the Season 6 box set on Aug. 24.
More than 1,000 lots are expected to be up for grabs at the auction, and a preview of some of the items is available now at www.profilesinhistory.com. Registration can also be done through this website, while tickets will be sold through www.razorgator.com.
The Emmy-winning series debuted in 2004 and had its series finale in May of this year. It's known as one of the most expensive shows ever on television, due mostly to a large cast and high filming costs in Hawaii.
