A 'Haven' for Shatner: When geek culture collides, look out! Science fiction and fantasy have become so mainstream that even calling it "geek culture" anymore is debatable. "The Big Bang Theory," the CBS sitcom about geeky friends doing geeky things, is a massive hit, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" (2012) and its sequels have raked in piles of cash at the box office, and sci-fi and fantasy novels routinely show up on bestseller lists.

Now, one of the earliest and biggest icons of science fiction is heading back to the small screen, with a guest appearance in one of Syfy's biggest shows. The legendary William Shatner is headed to "Haven" later this season, with a four-episode arc planned for the beloved actor.

"Haven" has been a big hit for Syfy. The supernatural drama, which is loosely based on Stephen King's novel "The Colorado Kid," stars Emily Rose ("ER"), Lucas Byrant ("The Vow," 2012) and Eric Balfour ("24").

Golden Globe winner Shatner first burst into the national consciousness with his role as Captain James T. Kirk in the original "Star Trek" series. Since then, he's been a near-constant presence on TV screens. He famously played The Big Giant Head in "3rd Rock from the Sun," starred in "Boston Legal" and hosted "Weird or What?" on Discovery.

In "Haven," Shatner's character won't be some small-fry minor character, despite only appearing in four episodes. Watch for him to play a pivotal role in resolving the events that occurred in the shocking mid-season finale that aired earlier this month (no spoilers here!).

"Haven" already has an incredibly loyal following, but with a name like William Shatner guest starring, it may find itself some new fans. "Haven's" fifth season returns in the new year.

The show must go on: It's a show that attracted a lot of attention when it was first announced — first for all the right reasons, and then for a tragic reason.

Showtime's "Happyish," a dark comedy about the pursuit of happiness, has continued its pre-production, despite losing its star earlier this year. Philip Seymour Hoffman ("Capote," 2005) tragically took his own life shortly after the show's pilot wrapped up filming, but after a respectful waiting period, the show's production is moving ahead.

English actor and comedian Steve Coogan ("Alan Partridge," 2013) will be leading the cast as 44-year-old Thom Payne, whose comfortable life is thrown into a state of disarray. With words like "viral," "digital" and "social" now being tossed around, Payne may need to rebrand himself if he wants to stay relevant in an evolving world.

Other actors signed on for the project include Kathryn Hahn ("The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," 2013); Bradley Whitford ("The West Wing"), who's replaced Rhys Ifans ("The Amazing Spider-Man," 2012) from the first pilot; and the recently signed Ellen Barkin ("Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," 1998).

With several casting changes, including a new headliner, "Happyish" will be filming a new pilot before it lands itself a premiere date. If all goes according to plan, watch for it in 2015 on Showtime.

Perry's half-time: Football fans won't need to be told that the biggest sporting event of the year is less than two months away, and, as per tradition, its halftime show is shaping up to be a big one.

Super Bowl XLIX will be held Sunday, Feb. 1, 2015, on NBC, and in an unsurprising move, one of today's biggest musical stars has been booked to put on the halftime show.

Katy Perry's music may not be for everyone, but there's no denying that she knows how to put on a show. For the Super Bowl, though, she'll likely take her performance to an even higher level -- after all, the event's halftime show is the most-watched musical event on the planet, with a record 115 million viewers in the United States alone watching 2014's event.

She may only be 30 years old, but Perry's already attracted the kind of fame that others can only dream of. She first burst into the public consciousness in 2008 with her hit single "I Kissed a Girl." Her third album, "Teenage Dream," became only the second album in history to have five No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 songs.

She's sold more than 11 million albums and 81 million singles, making her one of the best-selling singers of all time, done voice acting in "The Smurfs," (2011) and "The Smurfs 2" (2013), and spoken out publicly in support of a variety of causes.

One of the most celebrated artists in the world is performing in one of the biggest sporting events on the planet, and it sounds like a recipe for some good television. Super Bowl XLIX, along with Katy Perry's halftime show, is coming Sunday, Feb. 1, 2015, on NBC.
