When his history teacher, Harriet Wilson (Spencer), repeatedly praises him for being a shining example, and singles him out time and again, he expresses his dislike for her and for the tokenism he feels is being foisted on him. Luce raises Ms. Wilson's suspicions when he takes an alarmingly controversial stance in a writing assignment, and she takes it upon herself to warn his parents about his work, as well as other concerning activities, including bringing fireworks to school. Grappling with the knowledge that Luce was once a child soldier in his home country, his parents are forced to choose between defending their son and disciplining him, while balancing their own expectations with their family's reality.
