Q: Will the NBC series "Chuck" ever make a comeback with any future episodes or seasons? It had a great five-season run, but ended abruptly on a huge cliffhanger.

I can't help but think you know what's coming here: No, there's little chance of "Chuck" coming back. It was barely here to begin with, and it left quite a while ago.

It was one of those perennial on-the-bubble shows, meaning the network never fully committed to it -- renewals came late, and never for a full season (when it did get a full, 22-episode season, it always started as a 13-episode renewal that was extended after the fact). That's because, in part, its ratings were never great. Mostly, it stayed on the air because canceling it was a risk, too: 5.3 million viewers (its average in the last three seasons) in the hand are worth more in the bush, so to speak.

When the cancelation did come, it came with enough notice that the show's writers were able to write the entire fifth season knowing it would be the last. (That season, by the way, aired all the way back in 2011, which is another reason it's unlikely to come back.) Entertainment Weekly reviewer Sandra Gonzalez (an admitted fan of the show) said in her review of the finale that, "It's been a long time since I saw a show go out so perfectly on its own terms."

That's why I'm a little surprised to hear you refer to the end as a "huge" cliffhanger. It certainly left things unresolved, but that was the point. It ends with Chuck (Zachary Levi, "Heroes Reborn") and Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski, "Dexter") sitting on a beach together. Sarah, whose memory has been erased, asks Chuck to tell her the story of their life together. It's a handy little device that lets the viewers look back on the events of the show.

We don't know, ultimately, if she regains her memory, but we get to hope, and we get to leave with a sense that maybe it doesn't matter, because they'll just keep getting into more heartwarming jams together as long as they both shall live. (If I sound a little sappy here, let me disclose that I, too, was a big fan of this show.)

Of course, you're right in thinking that this ending leaves room for more. And if the endless stream of remakes, reboots and fan-supported revivals of recent years have taught us anything, it's that you can never say never.
