You must have been watching the first episode of season 22, when all three hosts wore lapel pins of the Chilean flag.

There was no official announcement, or even an unofficial one from notoriously loose-lipped host Jeremy Clarkson, but the pins were likely a subtle thank you to Chile, which helped the "Gear"-heads out of a significant jam back in October.

Clarkson and the show's crew had their car convoy pelted with rocks and other projectiles as they drove through the Patagonia region of Argentina.

The minor riot seems to have been sparked by the license plate on Clarkson's car, H982 FKL, which was thought to refer to the Falklands War, which Britain fought with Argentina in 1982.

The crew was allowed to flee to neighboring Chile, which seems to be the reason for the pins, worn on the show's first episode since the incident.

Clarkson claimed in an interview with "The Daily Mail" that Argentina wanted to arrest him and his crew, and that Chile had refused an official diplomatic request to turn them away at the border.

Argentina's ambassador to Britain later called for an official apology from the show's network, the BBC.

"Top Gear" has been a magnet for controversy, with Clarkson specifically getting into constant trouble, frequently for making racially insensitive comments.
