Q&A

Q: I saw the movie "Southpaw," and the boxing commentator in that movie was the same guy I saw in "Creed," another boxing movie that came out the same year. Is he a former boxer or something?

Both of those movies -- 2015's "Southpaw" and "Creed" -- were aiming for authenticity in their representations of the boxing world, and there are few easier ways to boost your boxing bona fides than hiring legendary commentator Jim Lampley.

Lampley has been calling boxing matches for HBO since 1988, and that job has created an inseparable link between his voice and boxing for the modern-day fan.

And so it shouldn't be surprising that he often gets called on to add a little realism to boxing movies. Other instances include 2010's "The Fighter," 2006's "Rocky Balboa" and 2001's "Ocean's Eleven."

He wasn't the only real-life boxing personality to get the call for "Southpaw" and "Creed," though. In "Southpaw," he appeared alongside his current HBO on-air partner Roy Jones Jr. (a former fighter himself). And in "Creed," Lampley appeared alongside a number of real pro boxers, such as British heavyweight Tony Bellew and, as the villain of the movie, recently retired champ Andre Ward.
