Q&A

Q: I enjoy watching the show "Ghost Hunters" and other shows like it. Do Jason Hawes and the other people who chase ghosts get paid by the TV networks for these shows? If so, how much do they get per episode?

In the case of "Ghost Hunters," like most TV shows, actually, they are actually paid by a production company, which serves as a sort of middleman between the network and the stars themselves.

The production company behind the hit Syfy reality show is Pilgrim Studios, which was also behind such shows as "The Ultimate Fighter" and "American Chopper."

The money, then, comes from advertising, not from the clients themselves. "Ghost Hunters" team member Amy Bruni confirmed on her Facebook page -- she's a prolific social media user -- that The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS, for short) doesn't charge clients for its ghost-hunting services.

However, there's no actual dollar figure available for what the team members get paid. The paychecks can't be that big, though, because they all seem to spend their spare time supplementing them.

For example, the TAPS members have a pretty active side business of hosting amateur ghost-hunting events, where people can buy tickets to a weekend of paranormal activities and celebrity elbow-rubbing -- tickets cost in the $200-$300 range. Of course, TAPS also sells branded merchandise.

One interesting bit of merchandise is the TAPS app -- a program that turns your mobile device (currently available for iPhones and iPads and for Android devices) into a paranormal-investigation tool, able to sense electromagnetic fields, atmospheric vibrations and audio.
