Well that's the big question, isn't it?

I must point out here that there are major, season-ruining spoilers ahead. If you've decided to watch this show late, having heard about its big Golden Globe wins in January, you'll probably want to stop reading now.

The end of the first-season finale sees Noah arrested for Scotty's murder. Scotty, for those who don't know but are willing to read it in a column instead of seeing it on TV, is the father of Noah's grandchild.

The arrest is a turning point for the show that opens up a number of new plot options for season 2, right when people were starting to fear that it would get repetitive (after all, a single extramarital affair is a side plot at best in most TV shows).

It opens things up because it is not at all clear that Noah killed Scott. The show is set up in a dual-perspective format, so that we see the same events from two different viewpoints -- Noah's and Alison's (the two people having the "affair" that is the central premise of the show).

The events surrounding Scotty's death look very different from their two perspectives, and we don't actually see him getting killed. Series creator Sarah Treem admits that the facts of the case will still be up in the air next season.

"If you think about the evidence the detective is arresting Noah on, he doesn't actually have that much to go on. So he needs more," she told E!

However, she says that she will suspend the "he said/she said" structure of the series at one point and actually lay out what happened to Scotty.

"That's the moment I'm pretty sure we will see objectively, but I think the way that we get there is going to be a bit of a puzzle, so when the audience arrives at it, they will discover it for themselves."

All that is to say, don't expect an answer to your question any time soon.

There's a lot of buzz surrounding the show now that it's won the Golden Globes for best drama series and best actress (for Ruth Wilson). However, as of press time, Showtime hasn't announced a return date for the second season.
